A Legacy of Innovation and Impact - Celebrating the Career of Pete Singhofen

After more than 40 years of pioneering advancements in water resources, stormwater management, and flood forecasting, we celebrate the remarkable career of Pete Singhofen, PE, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Streamline Technologies, a WGI Ventures acquisition and subsidiary of WGI.

As Pete steps into retirement, we reflect on a career marked by cutting-edge technology, unwavering dedication, and a legacy of profound impact on the engineering community and the communities in which he’s served.

A Vision for Innovation

In 1984, Pete Singhofen founded Streamline Technologies with a clear mission in mind: to advance innovation in water resources, stormwater management, and flood forecasting for improved resiliency and sustainability in the world around us.

With a modest team and a bold vision, Pete’s relentless pursuit of excellence soon laid the foundation for Streamline’s reputation as a national leader in hydrodynamic modeling and flood forecasting solutions. Today, the company’s flagship software, StormWise (formerly ICPR), is a cornerstone tool for over 1,000 clients, including ENR 500 firms, federal and state agencies, local governments, and leading academic institutions.

“Pete's vision and direction have resulted in a product that has a positive and significant impact on our community now and into the future. He has given our entire team the opportunity to apply their skills to something we can all be proud of.”

Sr. Principal Software Engineer

Defining Contributions

As the original developer of StormWise, Pete’s expertise and passion have helped redefine how hydrologic & hydraulic (H&H) models address complex water systems – But his contributions don’t stop there.
With a legacy built on groundbreaking achievements, Pete has left a lasting impact on the industry with contributions that include:

  • Advancing Hydrodynamic Modeling: As the developer of StormWise, Streamline Technologies has set a new standard for precision and functionality in hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling, including integrated surface water and groundwater interactions.
  • Pushing the Boundaries of Flood Forecasting: Through the development of FloodWise, Streamline Technologies is empowering communities with real-time tools to prepare for, mitigate, and recover from flood risks like never before.
  • Championing Sustainability: By addressing critical challenges such as sea level rise, coastal surge, and the global increase in severe weather events, Streamline Technologies has helped to pave the way for more sustainable and resilient infrastructure for generations to come.

Beyond his technical contributions, Pete’s commitment to knowledge-sharing is equally remarkable, having conducted over 200 workshops to educate, empower, and inspire the next generation of engineers.

“Working alongside Pete over the past decade at Streamline Technologies, and in knowing him for more than 20 years, I’ve witnessed his unwavering commitment to innovation in the field of water resources. He has worked tirelessly with his team at Streamline to develop the next generation of StormWise (formerly ICPR), consistently pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with H&H software.

As one of the first beta testers of the software, I had the privilege of collaborating closely with Pete and his team at Streamline during my time as a consultant. StormWise marked a monumental leap forward from ICPR’s origins in the 1980s and serves as a testament to what cutting-edge technology can achieve. It has since become a groundbreaking application widely embraced by the water resources community. In truth, I thought Pete would stop there, but he instead took it a step further by venturing into real-time flood forecasting with the release of FloodWise, which now stands as one of the most impactful projects that I’ve had the privilege to work on.

Pete’s contributions to the water resources field, particularly in Florida, are truly monumental. I look back on my time working with him with gratitude – not only for the opportunities he has provided but also for the incredible journey we’ve shared. Throughout my career, Pete has been a mentor, a colleague, and, most importantly, a friend. It has been a true pleasure to work alongside and learn from him.”

A Partnership for Growth

In 2022, Streamline Technologies was acquired by WGI Ventures, the venture capital arm of WGI, combining its legacy of innovation with WGI’s expansive resources and vision. Reflecting on this milestone, Pete remarked, “It is the perfect pairing of an organization that appreciates the value of my life’s work, with the resources and vision to help me and the team sustainably take it to the next level.”

“WGI’s support and shared vision ensure that Streamline’s mission will thrive and expand, meeting the challenges of tomorrow with innovative solutions.”

Under Pete’s guidance, Streamline has evolved to meet the increasing demands for solutions addressing infrastructure vulnerability, real-time flood forecasting, and so much more. Furthermore, his foresight has positioned the company to tackle the pressing challenges of our time while creating a foundation for future growth.

“Pete not only had a vision for the future of water resources, stormwater management, and flood forecasting, but he also possessed the perseverance and work ethic to bring it to fruition. From the moment I first met Pete, his infectious energy and excitement were evident, and that same spirit continues to thrive within the Streamline team today.

At WGI, we take immense pride in being the team that Pete entrusted to secure his legacy and invest in the future he envisioned. Under Pete’s leadership and through the exceptional team he has assembled, Streamline will continue to set the standard for hydraulics and hydrology modeling.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Pete on a remarkable career that has left an indelible mark on countless customers, partners, and the communities we collectively serve.

On a personal note, I will miss working with Pete, his ongoing stream of ideas and projects, and especially his first actions of the day usually starting at about 4:45 AM!”

Reflections and Gratitude

As Pete prepares to step away, his reflections speak to a journey defined by a passion to push the boundaries of what's possible and the collaboration he's experienced along the way:

"Glen Hansard, an Irish singer and songwriter, once said: "We decided to kick our ball as hard as we could and see how far it would go. We were hoping it would reach the end of the garden, but we watched it go … across the street, over the next town, into a place we’d never even heard of before."

This has always resonated with me. Streamline’s ball has been kicked out of the garden too and continues to roll to places beyond my wildest imagination.

While I will never forget how we got here and the people who have helped so much along the way, it is exciting to imagine where Streamline will be 10 or 20 years from now. The foundation is in place, and it is now time to let a new generation take it forward. Streamline will always hold a special place in my heart, and I wish everyone involved, now and into the future, the very best."
